For the first time  Italy, the home of pastry making, will be hosting the prestigious final of the European Pastry Cup, set to take place in Turin, leading up to the world Finale in Lyon in 2019

Turin will most certainly stand as the European capital of Gastronomy 2018 as from June 10th to 12th, 2018, Gourmet Expoforum will host two of the most prestigious contests in pastry and culinary arts: the European Pastry Cup and  Bocuse d’Or Europe.

After a first edition in Paris in 2012 followed by two editions in Geneva in 2014 and 2016, for the 2018 edition the European Pastry Cup has chosen Italy, a country famous for the savoir-faire of its ice-cream makers and pastry chefs. With a victory in 2015, Italy is the latest country to have won the world Finale of the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie. They had already won the Trophy in 1997 and have also reaped two silver medals and three bronze medals. With an uninterrupted presence on the podium between 2009 and 2015, it seemed only natural for this great gourmet nation to host the most important European contest in pastry art.

Martin Chiffers, former president of the club of the UK, who led this country to be one of the most important nations in pastry field, will be the president of honour of the event.

Turin welcomes 7 nations

In the run-up to the finale of the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie, following on from the Copa Maya in Mexico City, the Asian Pastry Cup in Singapore and the African Cup in Marrakech, the European Cup is the most expected selection round and the one that showcases the highest level. During that one-day event, from 10am to 5pm, time of the awards ceremony, 7 teams will be competing. The order in which countries will be competing has just been officially decided by drawing lots:

1. Belgium
2. Turkey
3. Sweden
4. Russia
5. Poland
6. Switzerland
7. Bulgaria


As Italy has won the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie in 2015 with the team of Chefs Fabrizio Donatone, Emanuele Forcone and Francesco Boccia, the country is already qualified to take part in the finale in 2019 in Lyon, and is part of the TOP 5 nations.

5 hours competition challenge, three places for the world finale

To qualify for the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie, the 7 teams will have 5 hours to create:

- 2 frozen fruit desserts

- 10 desserts on a plate

- A sculpture made of sugar

- A sculpture made of chocolate


The European Pastry Cup will determine the 3 teams that will join the other candidates in Lyon. A total of 22 countries will participate in the 2019 Finale: 3 countries will go through from each continental selection round; plus the top 5 nations - Italy, Japan, USA, South Korea, UK -; 5 countries out of the remaining participants will be given a “wild card” by the jury. These “wild cards” established by Gabriel Paillasson are attributed to nations who deserve it the most, thanks to their achievement in the contest.

The world Finale of the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie will be in January 2019, as part of the Sirha trade exhibition in Lyon, France.
